Dixotomia on Quest or Steam: Which Version Should You Play?
Play the Meta Quest store version if you own a Quest and want to put the headset on and start playing with no PC involved. Play the Steam version if you have a Windows PC that meets the minimum requirements. It is also the route for Pico 4, Pico 4 Pro, Valve Index and Rift S headsets. Both stores sell Dixotomia, so the choice comes down to your headset, your PC and how much setup you are happy to do.
This guide is about hardware and setup. It does not compare graphics or frame rates between the two versions, because those depend on your own headset and PC.
What is the difference between the Quest and Steam versions?
The difference is where the game runs.
- Meta Quest store. This is the standalone version for Quest. The game runs on the headset itself, so you do not need a PC.
- Steam. This is the PC VR version. The game runs on your Windows PC and your headset shows it. The Steam page lists OpenXR, Rift S, Meta Quest 2, 3, 3S and Pro (through a PC), Pico 4, Pico 4 Pro and Valve Index.
Dixotomia is also on itch.io, which is the third store. The free demo is on Steam and itch.io.
If the word standalone is new to you: a standalone headset has its own built-in computer and needs nothing else, while a PC VR headset displays a game that is running on a separate computer.
Which version suits your setup?
| Your setup | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quest and no VR-ready PC | Meta Quest store | It is standalone, so no PC is needed |
| Quest and a PC that meets the minimums | Either one | Steam if you want to play through the PC, the Quest store for the simplest setup |
| Pico 4 or Pico 4 Pro | Steam | Both are listed on the Steam page |
| Valve Index or Rift S | Steam | Both are listed on the Steam page |
| Another OpenXR headset | Steam, after a test | OpenXR is listed, so try the free demo first |
If your headset is not named anywhere, read Dixotomia's PC requirements and supported headsets before you spend anything.
How much setup are you willing to do?
Setup is the real dividing line, so be honest with yourself about it.
The Meta Quest store version is the low-effort route. You install it from the store and play it on the headset.
The Steam route asks for more. For a Quest owner it looks like this:
- Check your PC against the minimums: Windows 10, an Intel i3-6100 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 470.
- Connect the headset to the PC with Link (cable), Air Link (Wi-Fi) or Steam Link.
- Start SteamVR, then launch Dixotomia from your Steam library.
If you go wireless, your Wi-Fi connection matters as much as your PC. A cable takes Wi-Fi out of the equation if wireless gives you trouble.
If fiddling with cables, drivers and routers sounds like a chore, the standalone version is the calmer choice. If you already play other PC VR games, the Steam version slots into a setup you already have. For the wider trade-offs, see Quest standalone or PC VR for shooters.
What can go wrong with the PC route?
Many PC VR problems come from a short list. If you choose Steam, it helps to know them in advance:
- The headset is not detected. Check the cable and the USB port first. Then make sure the headset's PC software is installed and running before you open SteamVR.
- The picture stutters over Wi-Fi. Use a 5 GHz connection for the headset and keep the router close. If you can, connect the PC to the router with an Ethernet cable. A Link cable removes Wi-Fi from the picture entirely.
- Your PC is struggling. Close background apps, update your graphics driver and compare your hardware with the minimums again.
- You feel unwell. Stop, take a break and look for comfort options before the next session.
None of these is specific to Dixotomia. They apply to any PC VR game, and they are the reason some Quest owners are happy to skip all of it and pick the standalone version.
Can you test before you choose?
Yes, and it is worth doing if you lean toward Steam. The free demo is on Steam and itch.io, which are PC storefronts, so on a Quest you would play it through a PC connection.
That makes the demo a cheap test of the part that can go wrong: whether your PC, your cable or Wi-Fi, and your headset all work together. Our free demo guide walks through the steps.
What else should you weigh?
- Price. The listed price is $19.99. Sales and regional prices vary, so check the store page for what you will pay. The release date, price and stores guide covers the details.
- Steam features. The Steam page lists Single-player, Tracked Controller Support, Adjustable Difficulty, Playable without Timed Input and Family Sharing. Check the Meta Quest store page for its own feature list.
- Where your library lives. If most of your VR games are already on Steam, or already on your Quest, buying where the rest live keeps everything in one place.
- What you are buying. Either way it is Dixotomia: a single-player sci-fi horror shooter made only for VR by Deep Matrix, where you play Reynor "Ron" Adams on Karna and mix sci-fi guns with vampiric abilities.
A quick way to decide
Answer these in order and stop at the first one that settles it:
- Do you own a Quest but no PC that meets the minimums? Choose the Meta Quest store version.
- Do you use a Pico 4, Pico 4 Pro, Valve Index or Rift S? Choose Steam.
- Do you own both a Quest and a capable PC, and dislike cables and routers? Choose the Meta Quest store version.
- Do you already live in SteamVR? Choose Steam.
If none of those decides it, play the demo and see which setup feels better to you.
Pick by hardware first. A Quest with no PC points to the Meta Quest store. A compatible PC and any headset on the Steam list point to the Steam page. If you want to test before you spend anything, play the free demo first and buy once you know your setup works.
