VR Audio Not Working? Fix No Sound or the Wrong Output

4 MIN READDEEP MATRIX

If your VR audio is silent or coming from the wrong place, the fix is usually a wrong output device rather than a broken headset. Work through the easy checks first: the output device, mute and volume, then the SteamVR and headset audio settings. Most problems are solved in the first two steps. Here is the order to follow, from the quickest fix to the more involved ones.

What is the fastest way to fix VR audio?

Start with the output device, because it causes the most problems. Your PC may be sending sound to a monitor, to speakers or to a Bluetooth device, and none of those will reach your headset. Then check mute and volume on both the PC and the headset. If sound returns, you are done. If not, move to the steps below.

Symptom Likely cause First fix
No sound at all Wrong output device Select the headset or the right output
Sound from the monitor Default device set to the monitor Change the default output in Windows
Crackling or delay Bluetooth or lag Disconnect extra devices, check the connection
Quiet sound Volume low or muted Raise volume on the PC and the headset

How do you check the output device in Windows?

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and open the sound settings.
  2. Find the output section and choose the device that matches your setup.
  3. Set it as the default, then play a test sound.
  4. Turn off any device you do not use, such as a monitor or spare speakers.

Menu names change between Windows versions, so look for the output list rather than an exact label.

How do you check audio in SteamVR?

SteamVR has its own audio settings. Open the SteamVR settings and find the audio section. Choose the same device you picked in Windows, and make sure the volume is not at zero. Restart SteamVR after you change the device, since some apps keep the old output until they restart.

Does the headset audio route need checking?

For PC VR, through a cable or a wireless link, the sound usually comes through the PC, so the Windows and SteamVR output matter most. For a standalone Quest, sound comes from the headset, so check its volume and any audio output options in the headset settings. If you pair Bluetooth headphones, they may take over the audio, so disconnect them or set them as the output on purpose.

What if the audio is delayed or out of sync?

Delay can come from the audio device, from Bluetooth or from general lag. If sound is late or stutters, the issue may be connection quality rather than the output. Our Quest lag fix list covers those causes. If your controllers also misbehave, our guide to Quest controllers not working in SteamVR covers the input side. And if your headset also loses its place in the room, see the tracking fix guide for lighting and reflections.

What if nothing works?

Restart the headset and the PC, then update your audio drivers. Test with another app to see whether the problem is specific to one game. If the headset still has no sound in any app, try another cable or headset port, and check whether the headset works on another PC. If it does not, you may be looking at a hardware fault.

How do you fix crackling or distorted sound?

Crackling is often caused by a sample rate mismatch, a busy Bluetooth link or a Windows audio enhancement that alters the sound. Open the sound settings for the output device and turn off enhancements or spatial audio effects if they are on. Check that the output format matches what the headset expects, then test again. If the sound clears, keep the setting and move on.

Why does sound stop after the PC wakes from sleep?

Sleep and wake can reset audio devices, so the default output may change without warning. After the PC wakes, check the output device in Windows and in SteamVR before you put the headset on. If the sound is still missing, restart SteamVR or the PC VR app. Making this a habit saves a lot of confusion after a break.

What settings should you check on a standalone Quest?

On a standalone Quest, sound comes from the headset's own speakers or from any headphones you connect. Check the headset's volume controls and look for an output setting if the headset offers one. If you use a wired or Bluetooth headset, confirm that it is paired and selected, and make sure you are not switching between devices mid-session without noticing.

When is it a hardware problem?

Isolate the cause before you replace anything. Try the headset with another PC, or try a different cable and port. If the model has built-in speakers, listen to them, and test a different pair of headphones through the same port. If sound works everywhere except one setup, the problem is that setup. If the headset is silent everywhere, it may be a fault that needs support.

Fix VR audio in order: output device, mute and volume, SteamVR audio, then headset settings and Bluetooth. Most silent or misrouted sound comes down to one of those. Work through them once, and you will know where to look next time.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my VR headset have no sound?

The most common cause is the wrong output device, either in Windows or in SteamVR. Confirm the right device is selected, then check the volume and mute settings on the PC and the headset.

Why does VR sound come from the wrong device?

The PC may route audio to a monitor, speakers or a Bluetooth device. Set the correct default output in Windows and in SteamVR, and disconnect or turn off any device you do not use.

Can Bluetooth headphones cause VR audio problems?

They can. A paired Bluetooth device may take over the audio output or add a small delay. Turn off devices you are not using and check the output again before you launch the game.
