Johnny Flaherty in Dixotomia: His Fate Explained (Spoilers)

4 MIN READDEEP MATRIX

Spoiler warning: this post reveals the death of a main character and the later reveals about him.

In Dixotomia's lore, Johnny Flaherty, a Captain-Inspector with the Federation Inspectorate and Reynor's friend from the academy, dies in a corridor of Tibet HQ during the attack. Before he dies he gives Reynor his inspector's token and tells him to find Devaldo. Later, the design notes have Reynor find footage at the Refinery that proves Johnny is alive. The lore documented here does not reconcile the two.

Who is Johnny Flaherty?

  • Rank. Captain-Inspector with the Federation Inspectorate.
  • Link to Reynor. A friend from the academy, unseen for ten years, or fifteen counting the cryo.
  • Looks. Thick dark hair and a scar running from mid-forehead to the right cheekbone.
  • Manner. Sarcastic, profane and funny.
  • Greeting. He greets Reynor as Ronnie, and jokes about a bald skull although he is not bald.

What is Johnny's story in order?

His part in the lore runs through nine beats:

  1. He wakes from cryo on the transport.
  2. He opens the sealed orders with Reynor.
  3. He learns that the relay has been dead for three years.
  4. He rides the shuttle down and comments on Tibet's smuggling.
  5. He does not answer his door at Tibet HQ.
  6. He is found bleeding out in a corridor.
  7. He gives Reynor his token and the order to find Devaldo.
  8. In the design notes, Price calls him missing.
  9. In the design notes, footage at the Refinery shows him alive.

How do Reynor and Johnny reunite?

Reynor wakes alone, and a nurse takes him to Johnny, who is just out of cryo. The two friends open their sealed orders: replace Inspector Aurora Devaldo, whose file is almost empty. They recite the roster to each other from memory. Reynor says Aurora's face is familiar, and Johnny laughs it off.

When the transport leaves hyperspace, Johnny learns that the relay has been dead for three years. He sums up the situation in one line: they are going in completely blind. On the shuttle down, he notes with admiration how the steward dumped his problem onto Tibet and exposed Tibet's smuggling in one move, and then says that reporting it will change nothing.

What does Johnny know that Reynor doesn't?

The lore establishes that Johnny had secrets. At Tibet HQ, Reynor knocks on Johnny's door on his way to the range. There is no answer, and Reynor thinks the word "Strange." Johnny dies before he can explain.

That small moment is one of the story's first signs that something is wrong. The man whose job is to audit Tibet is not answering his door.

How does Johnny die?

After the attack begins, Reynor follows a blood trail down a side corridor and finds Johnny propped against the wall, coughing blood. His suit medkit is already maxed. Johnny speaks Reynor's name and gives him a weary summary of the day. Then he drops his inspector's token on his own stomach and gives an order: "Find Devaldo. She must know something. Something's going on here..."

Reynor hides the token in his pistol grip. Soon afterwards he is in the hall where Duncan descends, and the fight that follows is covered in Duncan boss fight explained.

What does the inspector's token do?

The token is Johnny's inspector credential, and it keeps mattering after his death:

  • It comes with the instruction. It is the object Johnny hands over as he tells Reynor to find Devaldo.
  • It stays hidden. After the regen tank, Reynor checks the pistol grip and finds it still there. His thought is that it is at least something he still controls.
  • It opens a file. Reynor touches the token to an infocard labelled with his own name and treatment, and copies the contents to his suit. They include Esmeralda's log of the Mine 17 incident and an intercepted letter from the miner Said Hassan.

Why does Johnny's death matter?

It gives Reynor a mission that does not come from Tibet. Everyone who gives him orders on Karna is lying to him, so the last instruction from a man he trusted becomes the one lead that is his own. Find Devaldo is the story's real starting line, and the profile of Aurora Devaldo, the missing inspector shows who she is.

The death also fits the lore's themes. Time is stolen, since years separate the friends before they even meet again. The system fails, since a federal inspector dies inside the company he was sent to audit.

What do the design notes say about Johnny?

The novelization pages and the design notes tell different parts of his story:

Source What it says about Johnny
Novelization He is found bleeding out in a corridor, gives Reynor his token and dies
Design notes Price confirms Johnny is missing while knowing better
Design notes The attack was engineered, and Price was in on it only to neutralise Johnny
Design notes Neither Price nor Stern planned for a third party to abduct him
Design notes At the Refinery, Reynor finds footage proving Johnny is alive

Is Johnny alive or dead?

Both claims are on the record, and the lore documented here does not say how they fit together. What it does document:

  • The scene in the corridor, with his last words and the token.
  • Price's statement that Johnny is missing.
  • The footage at the Refinery that shows he is alive.

The footage reopens the corridor scene without cancelling it, and the lore leaves both facts on the page. What it does not document is what happens to Johnny after the footage, or how the story ends. Speculating would go beyond the lore, so this guide stops where the documentation does.
