Deep Shaft 17: The Fever Behind Dixotomia's Story

4 MIN READDEEP MATRIX

Deep Shaft 17 is the mine where Dixotomia's story begins. Of the 42 miners working it, 28 came up with a fever of 40°C and no diagnosis, and nobody on Karna could say what was wrong with them. Reynor "Ron" Adams comes back to the planet five years later, as cargo, and the story starts from that unexplained outbreak.

This guide covers the setup only. It describes the fever, the mine and the world around them, and it leaves the cause unexplained on purpose, just as the story does at the start. There are no spoilers.

What happened in Deep Shaft 17?

Deep Shaft 17 is the site of what the lore calls the Mine 17 incident. The facts the story gives you:

  • Who. 28 of the 42 miners working the shaft.
  • What. A fever of 40°C.
  • The problem. No diagnosis. Nobody could name what the miners had.
  • When. August 2583. The lore treats this as the point everything else is measured from.

The Dixotomia timeline shows where the incident sits among the other dated events in the setting.

Why is a fever with no diagnosis such a big deal?

A fever of 40°C is serious by any standard, and 28 of 42 is two thirds of the crew. That is not one unlucky miner. It is a shaft full of sick people with the same symptom and no explanation.

On most worlds that would bring outside doctors and outside investigators. Karna is not most worlds. Oversight there is weak, medical and otherwise. The corporation that owns the planet runs the mine, the refinery, the research lab and its own private army, and the lore says Tibet Innovations smuggles "volunteer colonists" out of the Federation's poorer worlds as contraband labour. According to every inspection report, it has done so for fifty years.

In a place like that, a sickness nobody can diagnose is the kind of problem that can sit unanswered for a long time.

How should you read the numbers?

The lore tells the outbreak the way a dry medical report would, so the numbers carry the weight:

  • 28 of 42. Two thirds of the crew fell ill.
  • 14 miners. The rest did not come up with the fever, and the setup does not say why.
  • 40°C. About three degrees above a normal human body temperature of roughly 37°C.
  • No diagnosis. The one detail that turns an outbreak into a mystery.

Nothing here is dramatic on its own. A temperature, a head count and a missing diagnosis are the kind of facts that sit in a file until somebody asks the wrong question about them. That restrained tone, with the horror delivered as plain information, runs through the whole setting.

Why does the mine matter so much on Karna?

Karna exists to produce one thing. The planet is mined for the ore dinerite, and the concentration of the ore rises with depth, so the deep shafts are where the ore is richest. That ore is the source of decarbox, the compound behind the planet's terraforming and the company's fortune.

The same mineral shapes the weather. It rains melted decarbox on Karna, as the post on why it rains liquid plastic explains. A mine that feeds the whole economy is a place the company cannot easily afford to lose, so a sick crew is a business problem as well as a medical one.

Where does Reynor come in?

You play Reynor "Ron" Adams. He returns to Karna five years later, as cargo, after the long trip in cryosleep. For him the voyage passes in an instant, so everyone else has aged and he has not.

Early on, something in a dead elevator takes his left forearm. The wound heals in a way it should not, and from that moment the arm is not entirely his anymore. That arm is where the game's central question starts: will he remain human or embrace the dark side?

From here on this guide calls the sickness the infection. Where it came from and what it wants is the thread that pulls the story along, and this guide does not pull on it.

What is known at the start, and what stays open?

The setup gives you a clear list of facts and a clear list of questions:

Known at the start Still unanswered
28 of 42 miners in Deep Shaft 17 fell ill What the illness is
The fever runs at 40°C Why nobody could diagnose it
Reynor returns after five years in cryosleep What he finds waiting on Karna
Something in a dead elevator takes his left forearm What the arm will become

That gap is deliberate. Dixotomia is sci-fi horror built on a corporate mystery, and the story keeps most of its answers for later.

How does the rest of the setting add to the mystery?

Four parts of the world feed the same unease:

  • The mine. Dinerite is richer the deeper you dig, so the deepest shafts are the most valuable.
  • The company. Tibet Innovations owns Karna end to end, including a private army it calls a security service.
  • The weather. A hot, oily rain falls on the planet, and filter masks are required outdoors.
  • The distance. Karna is a distant colony in the Beta Virgo system, reached by a trip of five years in cryosleep.

None of these explain the fever, but together they set the scene for it.

What should you read next?

If you are new to the game, this order works:

  1. What Dixotomia is, for the game, the hero and the combat.
  2. Why it rains liquid plastic on Karna, for the world and its weather.
  3. The Dixotomia timeline, for the dated events behind the story.

Deep Shaft 17 is only the first question the game asks. To see where it leads, Dixotomia is on Steam and the Meta Quest store, and a free demo is available on Steam and itch.io.
