Who Is Otto Stern? Karna's Company Scientist
Otto Stern is the company scientist on Karna in Dixotomia: the fourth child of a family of doctors, who graduated from medical school but was refused a licence by Attecor. He drifted from underground practice into radiophysics and cosmogeology, and he chose Karna for its geophysics and its lack of medical oversight.
This profile is spoiler-free. It covers his background and leaves out his role in the story.
What are the basic facts about Otto Stern?
- Job. Company scientist on Karna.
- Family. The fourth child of a family of doctors.
- Education. Graduated from medical school.
- Setback. Attecor refused him a medical licence.
- Career path. Underground practitioner, then radiophysicist, then cosmogeologist.
- Why Karna. Interesting geophysics and no medical oversight.
- Appearance. Overweight, with ruined retinas behind old-fashioned filtered glasses.
Where does Stern come from?
Stern grew up surrounded by medicine. His family were doctors, and he was the fourth child. He finished medical school.
What happened next is where his dossier turns. In the Federation, Attecor has the last word on who may practise a profession, and a degree is not enough.
Why did Attecor refuse him a licence?
Attecor judged that Stern's interests fell outside medical ethics. The refusal was a judgement about him, not a technicality. A system that assigns every citizen a profession looked at what he cared about and decided he should not be a doctor.
Notice the wording. Attecor did not call him incompetent. It said his interests fell outside medical ethics, which is a judgement about what he wanted to do and not about what he could do.
That is the lore's idea of a machine deciding your life, in a very sharp form. The wider system behind it is explained in the Federation and Attecor.
How did he drift from medicine to cosmogeology?
His path after the refusal runs through three stages:
- Underground practice. He kept practising medicine without a licence.
- Radiophysics. He moved into the physics of radiation.
- Cosmogeology. He turned to the geology of planets and other bodies.
Each step takes him further from patients and closer to the physical sciences. By the time he reaches Karna, he is a scientist who used to be a doctor and does not belong to the profession that trained him.
Why did he choose Karna?
Karna offered two things at once: interesting geophysics and no medical oversight. The dossier names both as reasons.
The lore adds a sharper detail. Stern was not especially troubled by treating miners' diseases, but he was very much delighted by the opportunity that the weak oversight of the local medical workers gave him. It is the most unsettling line in his file, and it is as far as this spoiler-free guide goes.
What does Stern look like?
Stern is overweight and wears old-fashioned filtered glasses over ruined retinas. He polishes them constantly and will not stop. The glasses are part of how the lore draws him: a man who cannot see well and keeps polishing the glass in front of his eyes.
Eyes are a recurring image in the lore. Duncan has a glowing artificial pupil in an empty socket, Reynor's visor works as a second pair of eyes, and Stern has ruined retinas and polished lenses. The pattern is a story about looking, and about who gets to see.
Who does Stern work with?
He co-leads research on Karna with Rajesh Sanktar, in what the lore calls the Sanktar-Stern silicon cycle. For a full introduction to the other characters, use Dixotomia characters: who's who on Karna.
What does no medical oversight mean on Karna?
Karna is a company town. Tibet Innovations owns the mine, the refinery and the research lab, and it fields its own private army. The Federation's check on corporations in assigned colonies is the Inspectorate Directorate, which sends federal auditors with powers that include lawful interception of private correspondence.
Medical oversight on Karna is weak. For a doctor who has been told he cannot be one, that is not a gap in the system. It is the reason to be there.
Is Stern the only person Attecor shaped?
No. The lore uses Attecor as a force that quietly redirects lives, and the cast shows it repeatedly:
- Stern was refused a medical licence.
- Edward Price was offered a life he found suicidally boring.
- Reynor was routed into the infantry because his grandfather had good shoulders.
What sets Stern apart is the direction of the push. Reynor was routed toward a career, while Stern was routed away from one.
What should you keep in mind before you meet him?
Three facts frame everything else in his dossier:
- He is trained. He finished medical school, so he knows exactly what a doctor is supposed to do.
- He was refused. A system he cannot overrule told him he may not be one.
- He chose a place without supervision. He picked a planet with no medical oversight.
Put together, they describe a man with a medical education, a rejection from the system that licenses doctors and a career built on places where nobody checks. The lore does not need to say more.
How does Stern fit the lore's themes?
| Stage of his life | What happened | Theme it touches |
|---|---|---|
| Medical school | He qualified as a doctor | The profession he trained for |
| Attecor's ruling | His licence was refused | A machine decided his life |
| Underground practice | He kept working without a licence | Work outside the system |
| Radiophysics and cosmogeology | He changed fields | A career built from rejections |
| Karna | He chose a place with no oversight | Freedom from supervision |
