Reynor's Infected Arm and the Mine 17 Log (Dixotomia Spoilers)

5 MIN READDEEP MATRIX

Spoiler warning: this post covers Reynor's infection, Esmeralda's log and Said Hassan's letter in full.

In the story, Reynor's left arm is infected the moment a fanged creature bites him in a dead elevator. The regen tank closes the wound but leaves it looking terrible, Stern pitches his blockers as a bonus and the arm stays permanently bare. By the lore's rules, the infection spreads by bite, shows up as extreme fever, resists diagnosis and regeneration, and amplifies its host. The Mine 17 log and a miner's letter show what it did first.

What happens in the dead elevator?

During a drill the lights die, and the lift stops a level short at D5 with its doors jammed a few centimetres apart. Reynor strips his left glove to reach the manual release and opens the door. Something drops on him from above and sinks two rows of fangs into his left forearm.

The creature is dark and his own size. The suit's force field is the only reason the arm is not torn off at the elbow. A quarter-second later the thing's brains are on the lift walls, but the damage is done.

What does the regen tank do to the wound?

Reynor surfaces in a regeneration flask, and the bite has closed. It looks horrific, which should be impossible: regen tanks heal severe trauma without leaving scars. The infection resists regeneration technology, and the arm shows it.

The suit has also been modified while he was unconscious. The left bracer is gone, and the sleeve is slit open along the seam over the bite, so the only way to wear it is rolled to the elbow. The infected arm is now permanently bare. Nobody explains why.

What does Stern say about the toxin?

Stern admits that the tissues around the wound hold a rather active neurotoxin, which does not yield to direct removal. His xenobiologists have introduced omicron blockers, preparations that restrain the spread of the toxin. Then comes the pitch: as a small compensation, the preparations will slightly enhance Reynor's cognitive and physical abilities, until he is cured.

It is a clear example of the lore's tone. A man admits he cannot remove a poison and presents the side effect as a perk. For the full sequence of events around the pitch, see Dixotomia story explained.

What are the rules of the infection?

This guide calls it the infection, and the lore gives it five rules:

  1. It spreads by bite.
  2. It presents as extreme fever.
  3. It resists diagnosis and regeneration technology.
  4. It is suppressed but not cured by omicron blockers.
  5. It pays for that suppression by amplifying the host.

It also appears to be the same agent that produced Duncan, whose augments the virus consumed at every seam. The chemistry in the background points the same way. Decarbox melts at 39°C, the fever runs at 40°C, and the text never says out loud that the two numbers are related.

What does Esmeralda's Mine 17 log say?

Reynor finds an infocard labelled with his name and treatment, and copies it to his suit with Johnny's token. It holds Esmeralda's log, dated 14 August 2583, about Deep Shaft 17:

  • 28 of 42 miners were struck by an unidentified illness.
  • The symptoms were a fever around 40°C and difficulty breathing.
  • Three miners died of hyperthermia.
  • Express testing could not diagnose the cause.

The setup of the outbreak is covered in Deep Shaft 17 and the fever behind the story.

What does Said Hassan's letter say?

After the log, the card holds an intercepted letter from the miner Said Hassan to his wife. In it he says they picked a bad time to go down that mine. He says he has never felt so bad, but that it is nothing, and that the lady doctor says he got lucky and seems to be on the mend. His mate Petty, he adds, looks done for.

The letter is the quiet emotional centre of the story. It is ordinary and understated, and it turns the numbers in the log into people.

Why does Esmeralda bin the label?

Esmeralda returns and asks why Reynor still wears his helmet. He answers that it is the custom here to shoot your own people. She tells him he is in no danger, in a tone that gives the words no confidence. Then she touches her ring to the infocard, reads it, shows nothing at all, tears off the paper label and bins it.

The lore deliberately leaves her allegiance ambiguous. The gesture could be caution or concealment, and the story does not say which.

What does the arm do in the Duncan fight?

During the fight, the arm burns worse than any wound and painkillers stop working on it. Then, with Duncan's hand on Reynor's throat, the arm comes alive with a life of its own. It rises as if led by an outside force, concentrates the pain into a single point and hurls Duncan across the hall. Duncan boss fight explained tells that scene in full.

How does the arm change over the story?

Each stage of the story shows one rule of the infection at work:

Stage What happens to the arm What it shows
The elevator Bitten on the left forearm The infection spreads by bite
The regen tank The wound closes but looks horrific It resists regeneration technology
The modified suit The bracer is gone and the sleeve is slit The arm stays permanently bare
Stern's office Blockers are prescribed The infection is suppressed, not cured
The Duncan fight The arm acts on its own It amplifies the host

What does the infection mean for the game?

It is the root of the game's central question. The infection is where the vampiric abilities come from, and the technology in the other upgrade tree is the alternative. Dixotomia asks whether you will remain human or embrace the dark side, and Reynor's arm is where the answer starts. The game is on Steam, with a free demo for a first look.

Frequently asked questions

How does Reynor get infected in Dixotomia?

A dark creature with two rows of fangs drops on him in a dead elevator and bites his left forearm. His suit's force field is the only reason the arm is not torn off at the elbow.

What is wrong with Reynor's arm after the regen tank?

The tank closes the wound, but it looks horrific, which should be impossible because these tanks heal severe trauma without scars. The left bracer is gone and the sleeve is slit, so the arm stays permanently bare.

How does Stern describe the toxin in Reynor's arm?

He says an active neurotoxin around the wound will not yield to direct removal, that omicron blockers restrain its spread, and that the blockers will slightly enhance Reynor's abilities as a small compensation until he is cured.

What is in Esmeralda's Mine 17 log?

An entry dated 14 August 2583 about Deep Shaft 17: 28 of 42 miners struck by an unidentified illness, with a fever around 40°C and breathing difficulty. Three died of hyperthermia, and express testing could not diagnose the cause.
